Making Daily Tasks Easier to Do

Occupational therapy program focuses on improving your participation in the things you want and need to do through the therapeutic use of everyday activities (occupations). It can also help make daily tasks and activities easier for you. Your therapist can help you recover from injury to regain skills and provide support for experiencing physical and cognitive changes.

Occupational therapy services typically include an individualized evaluation, during which you and your family and occupational therapist determine the goals. They provide customized intervention to improve the personal ability to perform daily activities and reach the goals set in the evaluation, which leads to an outcomes evaluation to ensure that the goals are being met and/or make changes to the intervention plan.

In our skilled nursing centers, occupational therapists tailor their approach to each person. It is common for them to help residents develop skills for what are known as activities of daily living-self-care tasks such as feeding or dressing. OTs provide equipment to assist with these activities, modify the person’s environment to maximize independence, and facilitate participation in the center’s activities.

Occupational therapy services may also include comprehensive evaluations of your home and other environments, recommendations for adaptive equipment and training in its use, and guidance and education for family members and caregivers. Occupational therapy practitioners have a holistic perspective, in which the focus is on adapting the environment to fit the person, and the person is an integral part of the therapy team.
